Compassion and Kindness For Others

Dearest Elena,

Today’s story is HORTON HEARS A WHO. In this story Horton the Elephant hears someone crying for help on a little speck of dust. Horton says, “Who are you? Where?” He can’t see anything. “Why, I think there must be someone on top of that small speck of dust! Some sort of creature of very small size, but too small to be seen by an elephant’s eyes… some poor little person who’s shaking with fear that he’ll blow in the pool, no way to steer! I’ll just have to save him because, after all, a person’s a person, no matter how small.”

Horton the Elephant does this because he has compassion. That is when you truly care about another person other than yourself and lead your life with kindness. These are some of the most beautiful qualities a human being can possess.

The statement, “A person is a person no matter how small,” is also important because it validates the idea that every single person no matter who they are, big, small, rich, poor, a different race or religion matters because everyone, no matter how different, has value.

He runs into big difficulties on his quest to save these very small creatures. It requires him to work long and hard. Horton understands that these little creatures are weaker than he and can’t protect themselves. He has to stand up for them.

So, the moral, my little princess, is that you should lead your life like Horton the Elephant, with compassion and kindness for others because a person is a person, no matter how small.

I love you, sweet baby Elena, always and forever…
