Dear Elena...

This month we are celebrating Valentine’s Day that is dedicated to love. Our book is “Roses are Pink Your Feet Really Stink” by Diane de Groat.

In this book Gilbert is supposed to make valentines for everybody in class. Gilbert likes Patti the best and makes her card first. When he gets to Lewis he remembers how Lewis tweaks his nose and it turns red. He also remembers when Margaret makes fun of his glasses. So Gilbert writes something not nice...

Dearest Elena,

I am really excited to share this next holiday with you. It is one so many people look forward to all year. It is Christmas, December 25th. This is a very important day because it is the day that Jesus was born and Christians believe he is the Son of God. We celebrate by giving presents to those we love and appreciate, as a way of saying, “I love and am grateful for you.”

Our book for this holiday is The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by...

Dearest Elena,

Chanukah is all about miracles so I have chosen, A Great Miracle Happened There by Karla Kuskin. I love the way this story explains Chanukah through the eyes of a family. It begins with a description of a Menorah, the special candlelabra with nine places for candles. There is one special candle called the Shammas and it lights the other eight, one for each night.

Then it discusses the history of this holiday. There was an evil king, Antiochus,...

Dearest Elena...

The holiday we’re celebrating this month is Thanksgiving. You’ll notice that Thanksgiving has the word thanks in it because this holiday is all about celebrating things we are thankful for. Winnie the Pooh’s Thanksgiving by Bruce Talkington is one of my all-time favorites.

Our story begins as Pooh’s friends are looking for him. He requests that they gather together. “Why the meeting?” they ask. Pooh explains that today he suddenly became ver...

Dearest Elena… today’s book is It's the Great Pumpkin by Charles M. Shulz. It is about one of Mommy’s favorite characters in all of animation, Charlie Brown. It begins with Lucy, one of Charlie Brown’s friends, telling him to kick a football that she will hold for him. Historically, however, when Charlie Brown tries to kick a football that Lucy holds, she takes it away from him and he lands flat on his back.

This time, Charlie Brown says he’s not going to fa...

Dearest Elena..

Today’s holiday is Labor Day and our book is Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin. Labor Day celebrates the hard work that people do in the workforce. You see, people need to work to make a living to live the life they desire. In exchange for working, they make money. This allows them to buy things they need, like clothes, food and shelter.

In our story, the cows on a farm have a typewriter and they write to Farmer Brown, their...

Okay Elena, we have come full circle and are back to the first holiday that our Conversations celebrated - the 4th of July or Independence Day. So, today’s book is The 4th of July Story by Alice Dalgliesh. I love it because it gives the reason why we celebrate this holiday. It talks about the oriiginal thirteen colonies that belonged to England. After many years, the people in these colonies decided they didn’t want to belong to England anymore or to the En...

Dearest Elena,

Today we are going to talk about another holiday that celebrates the special relationship between child and parent, Father’s Day! Our book is Berenstain Bears: We Love our Dad! by Stan & Jan Berenstain with Mike Berenstain.

Brother, Sister and Honey are excited to give their Dad a gift for Father’s Day. Honey says, “Daddy always has a lot of work around the house, what if we do his work for him and let him relax instead?” Brother and Sist...

Dearest Elena,

Today’s talk is about the book, SOMEDAY by Alison McGhee which celebrates one of the most important holidays for you and me, Mother’s Day! It celebrates our relationship, that of mother and daughter. This book is all about a baby that grows up and becomes a woman and what this is like for her mother, as she watches her. It begins with her mother counting her baby’s fingers and then kissing each one. Slowly this little baby becomes a child who...

Dear Elena,

The month of April has a very important holiday for the Jewish people, called Passover. On Passover we eat a special food called matzo. LET MY PEOPLE GO by Tilda Balsley, tells the story of why we eat matzo and much, much more. The story begins when Moses sees a burning bush and God appears, and tells him he must free the Jewish people who are enslaved in Egypt. Slaves are people who are held against their will and must spend their lives working...
